Minorca tourism hangs currently on a delicate political balance. The future of the island is as precarious as a windsurfer on the waves of change Tourism statistics
are currently skewed by
The situation in Iraq and the war
International terrorism
Poor German and Italian economies
Job insecurities in England as companies contract out to workers in India and factories in China
Property prices escalating in the UK causing both emigration and holiday property purchase. This decreases the market for cheap holiday hotels and possibly rental accommodation.
Cheap flights causing an increase in the short stay market rather than longer holidays
Extraordinary weather causing many British tourists not to go abroad and enjoy the coastal resorts of England
Light is not to be found in the current trends to
enlarge the airport at a cost of 66 million Eu to be spent within 32 months, doubling the capacity of checkin desks to 42 and providing parking for 31 coaches
enlarge the spinal road along the length of the island to a dual carriageway, at a cost of 234 million Eu, tripling the width from 10.5 metres to 31 metres in order to cope with increased daily vehicular use from 7300 in 1994 to over 10,300 in 2003 with a peak flow of 18,000 last August, despite a drop in tourist numbers.
build golf courses
The enlargement of the airport will be to the detriment of the peace of the island to human inhabitants and to the wildlife as well as bringing chemical pollution with loss of trees and fauna from exhaust gases.
The enlargment of the road will have the same effect, but with much added visual detriment as well as to road-kill of animals attempting the crossing. The road currently produces an accident every three days on account of speeding and failing to comply with the highway code. A new road will not help.
The building of golf courses
will not be a panacea to the tourist industry - properties on the Los Arqueros Golf course in mainland Spain are the most difficult to let of all the webmaster's Spanish holiday rental clients. The whole of Spain is littered with golf courses as is Mallorca. Rental demand for property near these is low
cause excessive environmental disruption in their building
require excessive water consumption, which simply is not available on the island
In view of declining fossil fuel reserves and increased global warming, the current flourishing of air and car travel is a 30 year blip in the history of mankind and tourism. These policies are taking the island into the wrong direction.
Global warming has, this year, caused most property owners to feel required by holiday makers renting villas and apartments to install air-conditioning. This is of concern to the accommodation owners only in the cost and price of required electricity. But the island has no energy production resources, unless like Sardinia windpower is harnessed, and the electrical infrastructure on the island
cannot cope with a massive expansion of facilities.
The proposed developments are unsustainable and one must examine the way in which the natural beauty of Menorca can be harnessed to stop the current administration taking the island into a fossilised tomb without escape.
In seeking guidance,
the authorities need to consult the angel of history and examine their record of perceived benefit of development in former times - such as the delightful apartment block which blots the breathtaking view of the sea through the bridge, through which one expects to see the drama of nature and a natural panorama.
t
Later generations may regard now the peak of current achievement with disdain, wishing them to have been buried without record
together with the opportunity to mildly increase tourism at a significant but low level by the extension of the season
Hillsides covered with houses are not a pretty sight but without the terrible hotels ruining the perception of the natural landscape this development would have allowed tourism to exist with the nature reserve in front and sea unspoiled.
In isolation some developments appropriately placed can be quite attractive
if well landscaped - but the island does not need more. It needs to make better use of what it has.
Beer and chips mass tourism needs policing and buildings such as this will not suffice
to encourage people to come to enjoy the inherent beauty of the island out of peak season and not to seek that which is artificial
Ibiza has its image, and an economy that has ravaged the normal sanity of life. Mallorca has had its image and is now trying to shake off the Magalluf reputation. Menorca's image is, and should be, that of unspoiled inherent beauty.

Somewhere in the page above you'll find an "CLICK TO ENQUIRE" button or a straightforward email address on which to click. Enquiries go straight to the owner of the rental or property for sale . . . so if you are enquiring about more than one villa or apartment for sale or rent or generally about accommodation in the region, please send an enquiry individually relating to each property. Except for pages for a minority of clients, your enquiry is not going to a letting agency for all the properties in a region - you are booking direct with the owner . . . and for the reason below, we feel that you can have confidence in doing so.
A little about Latroba pages . . .
Qui la Cerca La Troba is the motto of the Latrobe family . . . and these pages are intended to help you to find easily what you seek . . .
As webmasters we are not acting as agents but are publishing what our clients have asked us to market for them.
During the course of working for our rental clients, we tend to get to know them quite well . . . and we only work for people who we can get along with, who we enjoy working for and who we can trust. We charge our clients partly on a commission basis . . . so we only work for good clients who provide a good service to their customers and have happy renters . . . such as yourself! For this reason we expect that you should have a good experience buying a property for sale or booking a holiday rental through our clients, and if you don't (very rare), we like to hear about it!
